Notes from the Music Director¯

September signals "back to school" schedules for all of us with school age children, but it also marks the beginning of practices for our choirs at Concordia. If you are interested in joining our Adult Choir or Handbell Choir please inform Mrs. Denise Hennig. Handbell practice will be announced later in the month.

ADULT CHOIR PRACTICE:

Wed. September 5, 7:00 PM in Church

The Adult Choir as well as the School choirs will be assisting with the learning of some of the new hymns in Lutheran Service Book, throughout this year. I thought it might be the time to discuss a little about the hymnody in LSB. Since we at Concordia have been using TLH and LW regularly we all realize that there were some word changes in some of the hymns from TLH to LW. At the time this was done to update the language of the older hymns. In some cases, this had the unfortunate consequence of weakening the poetic quality of the texts, especially for some beloved hymns.

When work on LSB began a Translation Committee was established to examine issues of language and translation to help distinguish between archaic and obsolete language. Obsolete language refers to words, meaning, and grammatical constructions that have completely dropped out of contemporary usage. Archaic language refers to words, meaning, and grammatical constructions that have connotations of being "old fashioned," but are still comprehensible and are still in use.

The Hymnody Committee carefully reviewed the hymn texts and determined that many of the familiar hymns that changed for LW should be returned to their original form: Examples: My Faith Looks Up to Thee, Take My Life and Let It Be, I am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus… Still, as we use LSB you may find that minor textual changes have been made to some of the hymns which was done to help provide greater clarity in the hymn.

While the text of the hymn is very important, a hymn also has a tune. For literally hundreds of hymns, the marriage between the text and tune is settled. For other hymn texts the tune might be changeable. Some tunes are more easily learned than others. The meter of the text has to be considered as well. It is not uncommon to find as many as a half dozen or more variations of the same melody for certain hymns. Some alterations were made from TLH to LW. Some of these have been retained in LSB. Thankfully for those who do not have soprano/tenor voices, the musical key for some hymns have been lowered into a more comfortable range for the singer. (This is true of portions of the liturgy as well!)

So, as we use LSB, you will find hundreds of hymns you are very familiar with. You will find some hymns with new texts, but familiar tunes. You will find some "contemporary" hymns that may be well known that were never in our hymnals before. And there will obviously be some hymns that will be both new in text and tune.

One last bit of information I learned as I read through A Guide for Introducing Lutheran Service Book, from which much of the information in this article was taken, most of the hymns in LSB do not have an "amen" added at the conclusion. In the history of Christian hymnody the practice of concluding every hymn with an "amen" is relatively rare. The Synod’s first official English language hymnal did not include "amens". In fact TLH is the only LCMS hymnal to have included "amens". For hymns that use chant melodies in LSB, the more elaborate "amen" of the chant has been provided, and because of the longstanding tradition, an "Amen" is provided for the common doxology. The Guide provides other musical reasons for many decisions regarding hymn texts and tunes. If you are interested a copy of this Guide is available in the church office.

"Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." Col 3:16

CHAPEL – Each Wednesday morning at 8:50 am

Every month the school has different chapel projects. Everyone is welcome to contribute to these donations.

In September, 4th year seminary student, Josh T., and his family are our focus. Josh attended Our Savior's Elementary, Lutheran High School, Concordia--Seward, Nebraska, and recently completed his vicarage in Nashville, Illinois. His wife, Rebekah, is a nurse and they have 2 young children. This year they return to St. Louis Seminary for Josh's final classes. If you would like to contribute you may put your donation in the box in the narthex.
