-Our Daily Needs-
Dear Lord, we pray to You for the needs of each day. Help us to be thankful for each day’s bread and not hungry for tomorrow’s cake.
¯ Notes from
the Music Director¯
As we turn the page of our calendar to November our minds often turn to Thanksgiving. This truly "American" tradition is not a part of the Church Year festivals, and yet churches across the country will have Thanksgiving services. What those at the Plymouth Colony knew was that it was God who deserved thanksgiving and praise that First Thanksgiving for His abundant blessings. Presidents and Congress have declared national Thanksgivings throughout our country’s history, the first being in 1777 after the victory at Saratoga.
Abraham Lincoln declared a national day of Thanksgiving after the Union victory at Shiloh and following the Battle of Gettysburg. It was Franklin D. Roosevelt that signed the bill on November 26, 1941, that established the fourth Thursday in November as the national day of Thanksgiving.
However, even Thanksgiving has changed for the nation from a sacred to a secular tradition, or so it seems. How often do you now hear of "Thanksgiving" referred to as "Turkey Day" and it seems more are concerned about what football games will be shown and when the turkey will be done, than to take time to thank our Lord and Savior for his abundant blessing to us individually and to our nation. Many congregations, Concordia included, has dispensed from a Thanksgiving Day service to a Thanksgiving Eve service, but even then the pews are far from filled. It is true that we should thank God daily, but Thanksgiving is a special time to declare praise and thanksgiving.
You might be asking, what does this have to do with music? Take some time to read through the Psalms. "Sing praises to the Lord… and give thanks to His holy name." (Ps. 30:4) "Come into His presence with singing!..... Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise!" (Ps 100) "I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being." (Ps 146: 2) God’s gift of music, a gift He gives us is used to praise Him and thank Him. We have so much to be thankful for – God sent His Son to save us from our sin! "Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God." (Ps 147:2)
P.S. The Choir is preparing the anthem "Praise the Lord" by G. F. Handel for the Thanksgiving Eve Service. We always welcome new members to our choir. We are especially in need of some soprano voices! Normally we practice on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm. However, please note that there will not be choir on Nov. 7 and on Nov. 14 we will be meeting at 7:15 p.m. There will be handbell practice at 6:30 pm on Nov. 6th.
Join your Concordia family
