"Lutheran Service Book" - What is it? Why did Synod produce it? Do we need it?
First of all: What is it?
Lutheran Service Book is a hymnal that the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has produced over the course of eight years. They put much thought into the production of this resource for use by the Synod. They learned many things, both good and bad, when Lutheran Worship (LW) was produced and introduced in the early 1980s. A survey, done in 1999, reported that 58% of congregations use LW, 35% of congregations use The Lutheran Hymnal (TLH), 7% of congregations use Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW), and some congregations use more than one hymnal as well as a variety of supplemental resources.
This leads to the next question: Why did Synod produce LSB?
There are those who believe there is disunity in the Synod in regard to hymnal usage and this new resource would help to draw the Synod together in this aspect. It was also felt that producing a new hymnal could take advantage of newer hymns that have been written that are not included in earlier hymnals. Also, knowing that there is a divide over hymnal usage, many favored parts from both TLH and LW were included in LSB to draw together the Synod. There are also other helpful inclusions in LSB, such as the wedding and funeral services that were not in TLH or LW. This careful blending of TLH and LW along with new materials has become LSB.
Okay, if it combines TLH and LW - Why do we need it?
To begin with it will help to bring a better sense of unity to the Synod as a whole. Ideally, as the whole Synod takes the opportunity to use LSB we will be showing another commonality to our faith. Here locally at Concordia we would no longer need to switch hymnals from one month to the next. We could take advantage of about 100 hymns not found in TLH or LW. We will see some older hymn texts and tunes restored to the way many of us first learned them from TLH. We will see a more "user friendly" layout/format in LSB that is better than either TLH or LW. The color of paper and print size is easier to read for most people. Along with the new hymnal, Synod has also produced a companion computer program called, "Lutheran Service Builder". This program helps to generate bulletins and allows for the inclusion of as much or as little of the liturgy/hymns as you want printed out. It will automatically format the service to the size of bulletin you need and can also automatically produce large print bulletins for those with certain vision concerns.
Overall, the new hymnal, Lutheran Service Book, is very well done and could be a great asset to Concordia. If you have not yet looked at it or have questions, please contact the church office. Our use of LSB will be brought up in the June Voter’s Meeting.

Fifty days after the Resurrection we celebrate Pentecost. Somehow, amid end of school activities, graduations, Memorial Day, and the beginning of summer vacation, this Festival Sunday of the Church Year often seems to get passed by as "just another Sunday." It certainly doesn’t get the glitz and glamour of Christmas or Easter, and yet Pentecost represents a very important aspect of the Church. "When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind…And divided tongues of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:1-4)
In the Third Article of the Creed we confess, "I believe in the Holy Spirit…" and in the meaning we recite, "I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith." It is the work of the Holy Spirit that makes us The Church. It is the work of the Holy Spirit that enables us to confess that faith and to respond with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. As we begin the Season of Pentecost, let our song join with the song of every saint from every age, declaring: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing! (Rev. 5:12)

They have been gathering donations from the collection baskets, dating, shelving and bagging food to be distributed and maintaining the current needs posters. The children’s individual spiritual gifts shined as they have volunteered with giving and serving hearts.
ACCOUNTS & AID/SCHOLARSHIP FUND
In Deuteronomy six we read that we are to teach the Words of God to our children and to have them on our lips and minds at all times. There are many other Bible passages that tell us of the importance of teaching our children the Words of Scripture and faith. In light of these passages, when the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod was formed, one of the requirements of being part of the Synod was to have a school. The Missouri Synod has always maintained the importance of Lutheran Christian education.
To help maintain this opportunity for Christian education there is a need for monies to help pay for the educational process. Here at Concordia we do have limited scholarships available for our members. In order to be able to grant these scholarship dollars we need the dollars. The scholarship fund is supported by donations from the congregation and other sources. It is not maintained by the church budget.
As God has blessed you if you could see fit to make a donation to the Accounts and Aid Scholarship fund it would greatly help the school and needy families to send their child/children to Concordia that they may be taught not only math, reading etc. but the words of God as well. Thank you for your help and support.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL- QUEST FOR TRUTH – "Jesus: The Way, The Truth, The Life" Vacation Bible School will be held June 24th – 28th from 6pm-8pm here at Concordia Lutheran Church. Check out the insert for more information and registration forms.
