A Note From Pastor Koschmann

I have this thing for time (Precise time - To-the-second time) which is why I wear an atomic watch. Which is why I have some five (at last count) atomic clocks on my Apple iPod Touch. And which is why I have gone so far as to customize my own personal world clock on my computer.

This particular program gives me up-to-the-second time in 24 cities around the world starting with Midway Islands in the Pacific Ocean and ending up with the Christmas Islands also in the Pacific. As said, I have this thing for time. (If only I could set my computers – and my iPods – time to the proper atomic time, I’d be even happier.)

"Time is money." "Time flies." "Time is of the essence." So ingrained is time that we have all these "catch phrases" and then some.

Run the word "time" in the ESV, and you’ll find it appears 599 times in 456 verses; first time, Genesis 4:3; last time, Revelation 22:10.

Of those verses, one stands out (at least in my mind), for he says, "In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you." Behold now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. (2 Corinthians 6:2).

There you’ll find "time" twice and the word behind that is "kairos," one of some two words the New Testament has for "time." "kairos" has a host of meanings and nuances; among them, "a point of time or period of time, time, period, frequently with implication of being especially fit for something and without emphasis on precise chronology."

In the context of 2 Corinthians 6:2, God’s favor is being offered to the Corinthians, and Paul pleads with them not to take this offer lightly, and neither should we.

There will come a time when God’s favor will no longer be offered and forgiveness of sins will be impossible to attain. The time to believe in Jesus Christ is now, not tomorrow.

After an unbelievably long winter, summer time is finally upon us. Let us resolve to make the time, take the time to recall what St. Paul said years ago. "Behold, now is the favorable time…" to receive by faith what Jesus has won for us; forgiveness of sins, life and salvation.
