LWML CONVENTION UPDATE:

I attended the LWML 65th Annual Central Illinois District Convention on June 5th in Quincy. The day was filled with memorable experiences. Being together with over 277 Lutheran men and women sharing Christ’s love was awesome!

Mr. Nicholas Salifu from Ghana was the convention speaker. Thanks, in part to LWML Mites, Mr. Salifu is attending St. Louis Seminary. Upon completion this November, he will return to Ghana to train more leaders in the church there.

The national LWML president spoke to the group about the 2011 National LWML Convention to be held in Peoria on June 23-26th. Due to the central location, record attendance is expected. All ladies of our congregation are welcome to attend! Look for more information as this time gets closer.

A report of Mites collected and dispersed was given. Mites from our district alone funded 8 projects including Student Aid for Church Workers, Effingham Braille Center, and a new printing of the Ongoing Ambassadors for Christ songbook.

A Bible study centered on Isaiah 43:4; "You are precious." which was the convention theme.

Our Concordia Women in Mission received an official charter as a new society.

This is just a short overview of a great experience. If there is more interest in details, feel free to talk to me – I will gladly share more.

Respectfully, Denise Bandelow

I Remember? - In August of 1999, the school year had just begun. Judy Nitz had been fighting cancer. The children of Concordia wanted to do something for her so the teachers got together and took the entire school over to the Nitz’s backyard and sang song after song for Judy. Judy stood with her sisters on the Nitz’s back deck and just smiled and smiled as she listened and looked at each of the children who were so precious to her. Judy went to her heavenly home just a few days later. –Patty Henschen

Faithful in all Things

Jesus said, "Whoever can be trusted with very little can be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much" (Luke 16:10). Jesus is saying that a faithful person will handle God’s gifts faithfully regardless of whether they have few or many gifts entrusted to them. Faithfulness is not determined by the amount entrusted but by the character of the person who uses it.

A faithful person will do the small things well. One day a young man went to a bank to apply for a job. After his interview, he was leaving the bank and happened to notice some small trash on the floor. He picked it up and put it in the waste paper basket. Seconds later, he helped an elderly lady with the door. Unknown to the young man, the man who had interviewed him for the job was observing him. The young man was promptly summoned back and given the job. The employer’s comment: "Anyone who pays attention to the small things as you just did needs to work here."

Unfortunately, we Christians may incorrectly think that small things aren’t important to God. We may have the attitude that God won’t be concerned with the small amount of money or other gifts that we have been given. In the Bible, God spoke mightily through the little that people had. God used the widow and her two mites to teach us a lesson about sacrificial giving. He used the small amount of flour and oil that the Widow of Zarephath had to demonstrate obedience. Jesus used the loaves and fish of a young boy to reveal how God can magnify a small gift. God commended their faith with small things, and He didn’t overlook what faithful people did with small things.

Through God’s Word, we understand that small things do count. Because we understand our need to be faithful with all things, we should ask ourselves how we are handling the seemingly small things in our lives. Are we handling small things well in our homes, jobs, and churches? Can non-Christians see a difference in us? With God’s help, we can be faithful with ALL that we’ve been given. Through our faithfulness, God will be glorified.

Topic: A Special Memory (05-26-10)

My special memory is of when my little sister was born. I remember when I got to hold her.

We were almost the same weight and height at birth. My mom called and told me she was born when I was at daycare, so my dad came and picked me up. I will always remember that day.

-Robby (5th grade)

One time my whole family went to Florida to the beach. It was awesome!

We searched for shells and ran in the water.

-Katie (5th grade)

My special memory is when my brother made his first basketball shot.

It was our last game and he made one of two free throws.

When he made it the whole tem and the people in the stands got on their feet and shouted.

Topic: Fire Departments (06-09-10)

Firemen are the first to come in an emergency. The firemen get their gear on fast too!

They know how to bust a door down and do CPR.

They don’t get much sleep and don’t always get breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The best thing of all is that they are heroes!

-Alec (5th grade)

Firefighters help put out fires to protect us.

The firefighters go to schools to tell kids what the fire department is like.

The firefighters will always get there fast because they can drive over the speed limit!

The firefighters in my town will always be there to help.

-Zach (5th grade)

The fire department in my town has great response time.

If you had a fire they would be there right away.

The firefighters risk their lives when they are in danger.

God has given them the strength to help people in need.

-Meah (5th grade)

Topic: Best Summer Vacation Ever! (06-23-10)

My best summer vacation was last year, in 2009. My family and I went to my great grandparent’s camp site in St. Elmo. We went fishing with my other grandpa, my aunt, my uncle

and of course my great grandparents! We went swimming too.

One night we went out and looked up in the sky and we could see the Milky Way. It was so cool!

-Kaitlyn (5th grade)

My best summer ever was last year. Me and my family went to the Bahamas!

We went to the Atlantis Resort there. It was so much fun! There was a huge water park

with slides and pools all over. That was definitely the best summer vacation ever!

-Logan (6th grade)

My favorite summer vacation ever was when we went to Wisconsin.

We went with my grandma to her cabin and we even got to go boogie boarding on the river!

-Katie (5th grade)

My favorite summer vacation ever was when I did dance class.

I love to dance and the classes helped me a lot. My favorite was a jazz dance that we did.

-Alyssa (5th grade)
