A note from the Principal: Our theme for this school year is “In the beginning, God created…” Genesis 1:1. Considering that our school year just started, the theme seems to fit well; but this will not be the only beginning we will have this year. The school year is full of beginnings: learning new things for the first time, meeting new people, sports, music, activities, our Christmas program and many more. We pray that in all these beginnings, God will be with us, and we will let Him take charge.

God bless you all as we work together to teach His children. -Dan Henschen

Per our handbook: “All parents are to attend four mandatory orientation sessions at the beginning of the school year. Please take a look at the schedule of the upcoming informational meetings and pick the meeting that will work for you. The schedule is as follows:

Week 1: Tue, Sep. 8 and Thu, Sep. 10 will both be led by Mr. Henschen and in them you will go
through the school handbook.
Week 2: Tue, Sep.15 will be a Ken Ham video session and
Thu,Sep17 will be led by Pastor Tom Baker.
Week 3: Only have a Thu, Sep.24 session due to a voter’s meeting on that Tuesday.
The Thurs session will be led by Pastor Tom Baker.
Week 4: Tue, Sep.29 will be a Ken Ham video session and
Thu, Oct. 1 will be led by Pastor Tom Baker.

“The Charger”, for those of you who have never received one yet, is our school newsletter. It is usually sent home with our students on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. The next date will be September 18th. If you would like to post something in our newsletter, there are forms in the office for you to fill out. Articles need to be in by the Wednesday before they go home to allow time for them to be typed and printed. For more information, please call Lora at 529-3307.

August/September Chapel Offerings

We are thankful that God continues to guide young men and women into Church work. To show our support, our chapel offerings are going to three gentlemen currently attending synodical schools.

Welcome back to School! Just a reminder:

Arrival Procedure from the Handbook: Children should be left off in the gym parking lot. Children may enter the school through the door by the gym, and from 8:15am students may also enter through the lower school door. Children should not enter through the door by the offices unless accompanied by a guardian or the child has business with the office. All children arriving at school prior to 8:15am need to go to before school care. No children are allowed to wait by the front doors unaccompanied by an adult. Children may wait in the cars with their parents or stand outside the door with an adult, but they cannot wait by themselves. Children arriving prior to 8:00am will pay the regular amount for extended care.

You need to continue to be aware of oncoming traffic and the school children who may be in your path. Also, during the school day, if picking up a student early or dropping a student off late, the student needs to come through the office and sign in or out. When doing this in front of the school, remember not to impede the parking for our staff. Our staff come and go from the front parking lot and need to be able to do that in a safe manner also.

Anytime you have a question please do not hesitate to call the office. -Thank you, Sharon & Lora

Who is that new teacher?

Thank you for the warm welcome I have received to Concordia Lutheran school. Sometimes being new, whether you are a student or a new teacher, can bring some apprehension for the unknown. But the family of students, teachers, pastors, staff and parents at Concordia have graciously made me feel a part of the family already—what a nice feeling!

The computer lab is ready to go and thanks to all that have helped in turning around the computers and getting everything set for classes to begin. I am excited to get to know everyone since I have the privilege to teach computer classes to all students from Kindergarten through eighth grade. Some of the things planned are keyboarding skills, making presentations and doing research work and especially correlating many things with what they are learning in their other classes. The younger students will work on basic computer skills and have some fun with reading, math and writing activities.

The rest of my time is spent with the seventh and eighth grade classes in teaching U.S. and Illinois Constitution, geography, grammar, writing, spelling, and literature. They are a great class and I look forward to a wonderful year.

Fall Activity Grades K-8 will have an opportunity to get to know each other and enjoy being back together at our Fall Bowling Activity on September 11th. The children will be divided into bowling teams here at school with children from each grade being combined to make up the teams. We will walk to the bowling alley together. We then plan on bowling two games. The older children on the teams will help the younger ones. There will be bumpers on each lane, so that should make things more fun for the less accomplished bowlers. The point of the activity is to have fun as we get to know each other better. The people at the bowling alley said we will not have to rent shoes as long as the children wear rubber soled shoes. The PTL will pick up the cost of the games for each student. After bowling and weather permitting, we’ll eat a picnic lunch in Miss. Billotte’s backyard before returning to school in time for the 1:00pm dismissal. Mrs. Henschen will provide a sack lunch for those wanting a school lunch. Children may also bring a sack lunch from home. Parents are welcome to come along and enjoy the morning also. Watch for further information as the time comes closer.

Everyone should come to Sunday School!
If you have been coming to Sunday School this summer, Thank You For Your Faithfulness! If you haven’t been here, WE MISS YOU! Parents, if your child enjoyed coming to Vacation Bible School, they will love coming to Sunday School. VBS had over 60 kids under 6th grade here. Where are they on Sunday? It is an important part of their Christian education. Also, stay and join us for Adult Bible Study which is held in the Heritage Room every Sunday at 9:00am.
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

**Watch the State Journal Register for:
future writings by the Concordia’s own 5th & 6th grade students!
Our student’s writings may be found as part of “Kid Scoop,” which is published on Wednesday of each week. These are some of last year’s writings that were in the paper after school let out.

I think an animal lover should read Brown Sunshine of Sawdust Valley, by Marguerite Henry. This book is about a girl that gets a mare and does not know her mare is pregnant until a few months before she is due. Amazing things happen to the girl, her mare and the foal. Have fun reading this adventure!
-Mary (6th grade)(06-03-09)

The time I laughed the hardest was when I was at a slumber party with some friends. My friend stuck a cherry up her nose! I almost fell over laughing! I was also laughing so hard that I started to cry! How she got it in there and how she got it out I don’t know.
-Aubrey (6th grade)(05-27-09)

A book you should read this summer is Warriors. The books are in a series. They are great books for cat lovers. They are imaginative and you can easily let your mind run wild. They are great books and I love them. The author is Erin Hunter.
-Emily (6th grade)(06-03-09)

I molded a silly clay creature out of clay one day, when it suddenly came to life. It was big and had big feet because I molded a dinosaur with a cat head and dog legs. So it looked very scary. It chased me around the house until I tripped on a toy. Then he caught me and asked “do you want to be my friend?” and I said “yes”.
-Patricia (6th grade)(06-10-09)

I made a creature out of clay and I was really freaked out when it came to life. He said he wanted to play with me! I asked it, what do you want to play? It said chess. So I got my chess set and we played. He was really pretty good. We played 10 times and he beat me 2 times. It was fun playing with him.
-Logan(5th grade)(06-10-09)

One day I molded a clay creature and it suddenly came to life! My creature was a polka dot green dove. It got up and talked to me. We went to the mall and got her a dress. Then she remembered that she forgot to tell me her name was Lilly. When I gave her the dress she turned back into clay and went back to her clay world.
-Cassie (6th grade)(06-10-09)

I molded a silly little creature out of clay one day and suddenly it came to life. My creation was a cow with wings so it started flying around the kitchen. It played with my dog and I molded him another friend. I noticed that all my clay creations were coming to life. I let them all live in my doll house in my room. Now they have learned how to clean the doll house!
