PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING: “Lord, I have loved the habitation of Thy house and the place where Thine honor dwelleth.” Ps. 26:8 How many times can we say that we have loved going to church. Maybe we have to be like the Psalm writer and remember that our worship is not for out entertainment, but for His honor and glory. We are “Growing in Christ through Worship.”
As the school year progresses we are having a number of students accumulating numerous
tardies and absences. We need to remember that by allowing our children to miss school in access, we are teaching that their education is not as important. Help your children learn the responsibility of regular attendance.
God bless you all as we teach His children together.

SPELLING BEE: Concordia will conduct it’s annual spelling bee on Friday, October 21. Our school spelling bee fulfills a 2 fold purpose. All children in grades 2-8 participate thereby allowing everyone an opportunity to participate in a spelling bee giving God the praise and glory for minds that can learn and spell. The second purpose is to choose our representatives from grades 3-8 who will participate in the area-wide Lutheran schools spelling bee at Lutheran High School in January. By having our spelling bee now, the ones chosen to go to Lutheran High will have sufficient time to study the word lists. Parents are invited to attend. We will begin at 10:00 with grades 2-4. We break for lunch, and at 1:00 the 5-8 graders will have their opportunity. The times are somewhat flexible because the times for any given grade level depend on how well the children are spelling.

PARENT -TEACHER CONFERENCES FOR K-8: The first quarter ends on October 28. Report Cards will be issued on Wednesday, November 2. Conferences will be scheduled for parents to meet with the teachers on Thursday, November 3 and Friday, November 4. These conferences are for parents in K-8. The preschools will not be having conferences at this time. Please call the office (529-3309) as soon as you can to schedule your time. Appointments are made through the office so that we can coordinate families with more than one child with times that are back to back.

PTL FALL FUNDRAISER: Thank you to everyone who supported our school with this fundraiser. We submitted orders totaling $7,432.50. We anticipate a profit of $3,105.14 that can be used for our school and church.

PARENT & STUDENT DIRECTORY: The directories should have come home with your child. If you have not received one yet or need another copy, please see Sharon in the church office.

STATE VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT: Concordia Lutheran is one of several sites hosting the State Volleyball Tournament on November 4th, 5th, and 6th in Springfield. This is a wonderful opportunity for our school to make money through the sale of concessions. We will offer a wide range of foods to suit adults and children alike. If we are creative again this year and have enough volunteers, we can have a successful event. Please look for additional notes that will be coming home as this event draws near and help out in any way you can!!

SCHOOL PICTURE: The date for school pictures is Wednesday, November 9, after chapel.

PTL FALL FESTIVAL AND SILENT AUCTION: Don’t forget to save Saturday, October 29, to come and enjoy the Fall Festival at Concordia. This annual PTL event is fun for everyone as the children play the games and the parents and children bid on items in the silent auction. The hours are 10:00 AM till 2:00 PM with games, food, and fun for all!

LUTHERAN HIGH NEWS: Mark your calendars for November 2 at 7:00 p.m. for the 8th Grade open house. Tours begin at 6:30 p.m.

TRANSPORTATION REIMBURSEMENT INFORMATION: Illinois Revised Statutes requires the chief administrative officer of each school to notify the parents/guardians of eligible pupils attending that school of this transportation reimbursement program by the first Monday in November of the school year for which reimbursement is available. This year that date is November 7, 2005. See the attached form.

QUOTABLE QUOTES

Stranger Within

A few months before I was born, my dad met a stranger who was new to our small Tennessee town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around to welcome me into the world a few months later. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me the word of God, and Dad taught me to obey it.
But the stranger? He was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries, and comedies. If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seem to be able to predict the future!
He took my family to our first major leave ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn’t seem to mind. Sometimes Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to her room and read her books. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)
Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home...not from us, our friends, or any visitors. Our longtime visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My dad was a teetotaler who didn’t permit alcohol in the home, not even for cooking. But the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much too freely) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing. I know now that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger.
Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked...and NEVER asked to leave. More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first.
Still, if you were to walk into my parents’ den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.
      His name?
      We just call him TV.
