WHAT DOES CONCORDIA EXPECT OF ITS PARENTS
*********************************************************************************************************************
[Back to TOP]Dear Parents and Students:
The Board of Christian Day School and the Staff and Faculty of Concordia Lutheran Church and School welcome you and wish you God's blessings during the coming school year. We are delighted that you are part of our family in Christ. It is our prayer to work in harmony with you in teaching your child.
We are looking forward with great joy to the new year and all the excitement and learning opportunities it will bring. Our primary concern at Concordia Lutheran School is your child. We want him or her to grow spiritually, academically, socially, emotionally, and physically as a child of God.
We all must understand our responsibilities regarding the schooling of the students at Concordia. This is why this handbook was written. It is important that you familiarize yourself with all the information in this handbook because it covers most questions that may arise throughout this year. It also contains expectations of both the students and parents. Your financial responsibility of paying fair share or tuition is only part of the $4000+ it costs each year to provide each student with an education. Your responsibility as a parent with assisting your child to become a good student is also addressed. We want the best for our children; please use this handbook as a guide to meet your responsibilities and obligations.
We would also request that you remember the staff, faculty, and the Board of Christian Day School in your prayers.
In His Service,
The Board of Christian Day School

HISTORY OF CONCORDIA
Concordia Lutheran Church established a parish school in September 1931. The establishment of the school occurred the same year that Concordia was officially organized and called their first resident pastor, Rev. A.C. Young. In 1931, the enrollment was 67 pupils. A portable chapel with a school annex at 13th and Knox Streets served as the location for the new school and church. During the first year of the school's existence, the school used two rooms in the parsonage in addition to the annex. In 1932, a building was made available to house the classes that had met in the parsonage. Another larger school building was built and dedicated in October 1937. During these early years of the school's existence, its faculty consisted of the pastor and Concordia Seminary students.
God has richly blessed Concordia since its small beginning in 1931. Concordia Congregation relocated to its present site in 1957 with a day school enrollment of 43. The basement of the church and the overflow area were used for classrooms until 1963 when a 6-room building was completed and dedicated. In 1972, half day pre-school was started for the three and four year old children; which has expanded to both half and full day pre-school. Concordia added 3 more classrooms and a gymnasium in 1984. We pray the Lord of the Church will still have more growth in store for Concordia Lutheran Church and School as we remain faithful to the Savior and His saving Word.

SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY
Growing Faith - Sharing Faith - Living Faith
Concordia Lutheran School is an integral part of the ministry of Concordia Lutheran Church. We adhere to and follow the church's mission and ministry statement which emphasizes “the Great Commission of 'making disciples' at home, in the community, and throughout the world. (Matthew 28: 19-20)” The purpose of Concordia Lutheran School is to provide Christian education in partnership with parents so that through Word and sacrament by grace through faith:
1. Children receive faith through the work of the Holy Spirit, grow in their relationship with God, understand their worthiness comes only from being a child of God, and have the assurance of eternal life.
(Proverbs 22:6; 2 Timothy 3:15; Matthew 19:14; John 17:3)
2. Children are equipped to worship, share their faith with others, and serve God and His people using the gifts He has given them.
(Colossians 3:16; Luke 11:28; Matthew 4:4)
3. Children are provided training for maximum spiritual, academic, physical, emotional, and social growth, with due recognition for individual differences through the various stages of development.
(John 8:31; Mark 9:36-37; John 10:10)

WHAT DOES CONCORDIA EXPECT OF ITS PARENTS?
As a Christian parent who is interested in his/her child's spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, aesthetic, moral, and social growth, you as a parent will want to:
1. Attend faithfully the entire year, the regularly scheduled worship services, thereby living the Christian example for your child to follow. Please see the section entitled, “Church and Sunday School Attendance.”
2. Regularly attend the meetings of the Parent-Teacher League, whereby parents can become better informed as to what their children are being taught and how they can further participate in their children's education.
3. Offer all concerns and suggestions for improvement first to your child's teacher; then if not resolved, to the principal; and finally to a member of the Board of Christian Day School so the situation may be addressed to reach a positive conclusion.
4. Support your child's teacher at home recognizing the teacher as God's representative. The teachers, through their work, are helping to fulfill an obligation of the parent by educating the child.
5. Be prompt and consistent in getting your child to school on a timely and regular basis.
6. Pursue opportunities to offer your services for the school.
7. Sign the agreement on the Master Record form stating your compliance with the objectives stated above.
8. Live in peace and concord with other families.
9. Provide a moral Christian environment for your child in the family setting.
10. Be good stewards and pay all fees and tuition on time.
"Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

CHURCH AND SUNDAY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
The philosophy of the Board of Christian Day School places emphasis on the faithful Christian lifestyle. The importance of a Christian education is degraded if the environment at home does not reinforce faith in Christ.
"Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy." (Exodus 20:8)
"Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is." (Hebrews 10:25)
"They continued steadfastly in the Apostles' doctrine and fellowship and in breaking of bread and in prayers." (Acts 2:42)
Members:
1. Members of Concordia Lutheran Church are expected to attend the Divine Service at every opportunity unless physically unable. Member families should attend not less than two times per month. Divine Services are held on Saturday evenings at 5:30 P.M. and Sunday at 10:00 A.M. with Sunday School and Bible Class at 9:00 A.M.
2. Adult members who are also communicant members are expected to attend the Lord's Supper.
Non-Members:
1. Non-members are expected to maintain an attendance policy at their own congregation of no less than two times per month.
2. Unchurched families with children enrolled at Concordia are expected to attend Concordia Lutheran Church or a congregation of their choosing no less than two times per month. Divine Services are held on Saturday evenings at 5:30 P.M. and Sunday at 10:00 A.M. with Sunday School and Bible Class at 9:00 A.M.
Implementation:
1. Families that question any action on the following policies are guaranteed the right to meet with the Board of Christian Day School. The Board of Christian Day School reserves the right of final decision on all questions not relating to the Word of God.
2. Attendance of members and unchurched families will be monitored and verified by the Board of Christian Day School through the use of the attendance and registration cards placed in the pews at Concordia. Members and unchurched families that attend other churches during holidays, confirmations, baptisms, etc. will be expected to verify their attendance if attendance falls below the minimum. The Board of Christian Day School in conjunction with the Board of Elders will have final adjudication on authenticity of verifications.
3. Classroom teachers will monitor attendance of members and non-members. Weekly attendance records of church attendance in each classroom are kept and are recorded on each child's report card. The Board of Christian Day School reserves the right to contact other congregations to determine attendance should a question arise.
4. At the end of each month the Board of Christian Day School will review church attendance records. Potential problems will be identified and families will be notified.
5. Any Concordia School family that does not meet the minimum attendance policy for a two-month period will be contacted by the Board of Christian Day School. A report will be sent to the Board of Elders for any action they deem necessary. If the attendance does not meet the minimum at the end of the third month, that family may be placed in a mission status category by the Board of Christian Day School. Mission status requires the family to pay 75% tuition. The family will remain on mission status until minimum attendance requirements are met for two consecutive months. A family that remains on mission status for a period longer than three months will be treated the same as a non-member and be required to pay full tuition. Failure to pay any portion of tuition will cause student enrollment to terminate. The Fair Share assessment will be waived during mission status.
6. Non-members who fail to maintain minimum attendance at their home congregation for a two-month period will be contacted by the Board of Education.
7. Unchurched members will be handled in the same manner as non-members.
8. Non-members are encouraged to attend adult instruction classes at Concordia Lutheran Church. The Board of Christian Day School feels that an understanding of how Christ is being presented to the children in our school is important. At the end of the ten lesson course, non-members who have attended classes will receive a credit on their fee statement of $10.00 for each class one or more parent or guardian attended; or if the family chooses to join Concordia Lutheran Church and has attended all of the classes and Sunday worship services at least 50% of the time while the course was offered, their fee statement will be credited to reflect mission status during the instruction period. Member rate will then be charged as long as worship attendance does not fall bellow 50% and other requirements of membership are met.
Bible Class and Sunday School Attendance
All families that have children enrolled at Concordia are expected to attend weekly Sunday School or Bible Class. The Board of Christian Day School considers this opportunity to study God's Word very important. Our life can be much more meaningful when God's Word is understood and practiced.
ADMINISTRATION AND ORGANIZATION
Concordia Lutheran School is owned, operated, and supported solely by Concordia Lutheran Church. The Board of Christian Day School, which is elected by the congregation's voters' assembly, makes the policies governing Concordia School. The principal, who, with the assistance of the staff, supervises the school's daily operation, administers the policies of the Board of Christian Day School. The pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church oversees all matters pertaining to the proclamation of the Word at Concordia Lutheran Church and School.
The Board of Christian Day School reserves the right to adjudicate any variation to policy.
ADMISSION
Concordia School is maintained primarily for the education and training of the children of Concordia's members. To the extent that space permits, community members are encouraged to apply for enrollment. Application forms and health forms are available through the church/school office. Tests will be administered to all students to determine admittance and/or placement. Parents are required to have a conference first with the child's teacher, second with the principal, third with the Pastor, and fourth with the Board of Christian Day School before the child is enrolled for the first time. Admission of the child may depend on these conferences and the willingness of parents to follow the guidelines of this handbook. It will also depend on whether Concordia Lutheran School can provide a good educational environment for the child. The Board of Christian Day School will make final determination on admission.
The Concordia Board of Christian Day School has established that children will be admitted to our school according to the following order:
1. Children where one or both parents belong to Concordia Lutheran Church, or children already attending Concordia Lutheran School.
2. Children where one or both parents belong to sister congregations of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod without schools.
3. Children where one or both parents belong to sister congregations of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod with schools.
4. Children whose parents are non-churched.
5. Children whose parents are members of other Christian churches with- out schools.
6. Children whose parents are members of other Christian churches with schools.
All parents are to attend four manditory orientation sessions at the beginning of the school year. The first one is to go through the Parent & Student Handbook and the other three are to discuss Lutheran doctrine as taught in the school. All parents are expected to cooperate fully with the teachers and the congregation. Parents who are not members of our church are encouraged to attend the adult information class, which features the doctrines of the Lutheran faith so they will understand what their children are being taught in school.
Parents who are members of another Christian congregation are expected to regularly participate in their own church, including Sunday school and worship. Parents who are not members of any Christian church are invited to attend services and Bible classes at Concordia until a home church is established. Regular worship and Bible study are an extension of the education offered at Concordia Lutheran School.
"Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." (Hebrews 19:24-25)
NON-DISCRIMINATORY POLICY
Concordia Lutheran School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.
ADMISSION AND ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
All children attending school must be potty trained. Children entering the 3-year old part day preschool must be three years of age on or before September 1st. Children entering the 4-year old part day preschool must be four years of age on or before September 1st. Children enrolling in the all day preschool must be 3 years old before they may be enrolled in the program. Enrollment may occur at any time during the year. Children who enroll in Kindergarten must be five years of age on or before Sept. 1st. Children entering Grade 1 must be six years of age on or before Sept. 1st. These policies comply with State of Illinois guidelines regarding admission and entry requirements. All enrolling students must submit a copy of their birth certificate, a completed master record form, and meet all the requirements stated in the section, “Physicals and Immunization”.
CHANGE OF SCHOOL RECORDS
It is the responsibility of the parent to notify the school office of any changes in address, telephone numbers at home or work, medical records, who is allowed to pick up the child from school, or any other essential information needed for the school records.
PHYSICALS AND IMMUNIZATIONS
Physical Examinations:
In cooperation with the Springfield Schools, and in keeping with Illinois State Law, Concordia School requires a physical examination from each pupil entering school for the first time whether it be in preschool, kindergarten, or any other grade level. A second health record is to be submitted by each pupil entering the grade 6. Any physical obtained after January 1 of the previous school year, will be considered current for the new school year.
All students who participate in the athletic program are required to have an annual physical examination before participation in practices of the sport.
Each physical examination form must provide immunization records. Health records for the entry level and grade six must be given to the school office by October 1st of the school year or before the first practice in the sports programs, whichever comes first. These forms are available in the school office. No physical examination form will be accepted unless the parent health history section has been completed and signed. Failure to provide evidence of a physical exam for grades preschool or kindergarten and six will be cause for possible suspension until the exam is completed.
Immunizations:
The chickenpox (varicella) vaccination is a required immunization. Children entering into any school-operated program for the first time at the kindergarten level and below are required to show proof of having received one dose of chickenpox vaccine on or after their first birthday. A physician can confirm past disease history-in lieu of vaccination-by having examined the infected child, documenting the parent's description of the child's history, or reviewing laboratory evidence.
All students enrolling in the fifth grade must provide acceptable documentation of two doses of live measles virus vaccine, with the first dose administered not earlier than 12 months of age and the second dose no less than one month later.
If a student has been vaccinated at 12 months, but less than 15 months, that student must receive a second dose in order to be admitted to school for the first time. A student who has been vaccinated at 15 months or later will be considered in compliance until the time of entry into the fifth grade. (77 Ill. Admin. Code; Section 695.10 (g) (2) (3), and Section 665.240 (c) (1) (2).
All children entering grade 5 are required to have a Hepatitis B shot. This immunization must be given in 3 doses.
All children must be immunized against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and Hib.
Each physical examination form must provide immunization records.
Asthma Action Plan:
All students who have been diagnosed with asthma must submit an asthma action plan when they are first diagnosed with asthma and at the beginning of each school year thereafter. Student asthma action plan forms, which can be filled out by the child's physician, are available in the school office.
Eye Examinations:
A state law requires an eye examination for entrance into kindergarten or any student entering an Illinois school for the first time. The examination may be completed within one year prior to the deadline date of October 15. The required form will be provided by the examining physician.
Vision screening will be done, as mandated, for the following children: all preschool, kindergarten, second, eighth, special education, teacher referrals, and new students to the school who have not been previously screened. This will be done within the first six months of school. Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo this vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous twelve months and that evaluation is on file at the school.
This notice is not a permission to test since vision screening is not an option. If a vision report is not on file at the school for your child, your child in the mandated age/grade/group will be screened. The bimonthly school newsletter will notify you of the day this screening will be scheduled.
Hearing Examinations:
Hearing screening will be done, as mandated, for the following children: all preschool, kindergarten, first, second, third, any child with a known hearing problem, special education, teacher referrals, parent requests, and new students to the school who have not been previously screened. This will be done within the first six months of school.
This notice is not a permission to test since hearing screening is not an option. If a hearing examination report is not on file at the school for your child, your child in the mandated age/grade/group will be screened. The bimonthly school newsletter will notify you of the day this screening will be scheduled.
Dental Examinations:
All Illinois children in kindergarten, second, and sixth grades will be required to have an oral health examination. The examination must be performed by a licensed dentist and he/she shall sign the proof of examination form. Each child shall present proof of examination by a dentist prior to May 15th of the school year. School dental examinations must have been completed within 18 months of each school year. This means that exams completed after November 15 will also count for the following school year. If a child in second or sixth grade fails to present proof by May 15th, the school may hold the child's report card until the requirements are met.
PERMANENT RECORDS
The school office maintains a permanent record file for each student (PS-8). This record contains personal information, academic records, attendance figures, and test scores. Information regarding the accessibility of school records by parents and/or students, and the right of a parent to alter, expunge, or restrict the usage of such records, will proceed according to the guidelines of the Buckley Amendment as it applies to Concordia Lutheran School.
TRANSFERRING TO ANOTHER SCHOOL
Parents should notify the principal if they move or plan to transfer their children to another school. The student's permanent records need to be sent to the new school. The procedure for transferring records is initiated by the new school through a Record Release form. All fees owed to Concordia will need to be paid before the final report cards are issued.

An offering is received at these services and sent directly to chosen mission agencies. This is an excellent time for children to learn to receive from their Lord and to be encouraged to give cheerfully and regularly. All students are urged to wear appropriate clothing for worship out of respect for God. (For further information, please see the section on "Dress Code.") Parents are also encouraged to attend chapel services.
MUSIC PROGRAM
Concordia has several choral programs that are offered through the various age/grade levels. Their primary function is to provide choral anthems that assist worship services at Concordia. However, Concordia's choirs may be asked to sing at various other functions in the church and in the community. The choirs rehearse during school time with all students participating. All children are expected to sing with their choir whenever that choir sings. Concordia offers band instrument instruction program for children in grades 4-8. Christmas programs involve children in preschool through grade 8. All children are encouraged to participate.

CURRICULUM
Concordia Lutheran School was founded and is established on the firm foundation of God's Word. To meet the goals and purposes of our school, the chief subject is religion. A well-integrated course of Bible history, doctrine, and memory work based upon our Lutheran Confessions is required of every pupil. All children participate in regular daily devotions and the weekly Wednesday morning church service.
Religion is not just a segregated subject in the school's curriculum; rather, its influence permeates all the subject areas taught. Unless the "3 R's" are taught in the light of the "4th R," religion, education achieves no moral good, but rather makes man self-righteous. All education achieves its highest purpose only if its aims are salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and in response to this salvation.
The curriculum at Concordia Lutheran School includes materials from ABeka Book, CPH, and a number of other text book companies. These are in keeping with Integrating The Faith and The Illinois Curriculum Program. They meet all requirements for elementary schools and qualifies our graduates to attend any high school.
The areas of instruction are:
Religion Bible Study, Doctrine, Church History, Worship,
Missions, and Memorization
Language Arts Reading, Phonics, English, Spelling, Writing, Speech, Handwriting
Mathematics Basic approach to Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and
related areas with an emphasis on the fundamentals

DRESS CODE
May God be pleased with the way we dress. Concordia students will dress and groom themselves according to Christian standards of good judgment, good taste, and modesty. It is important to note that the Bible speaks to the dress and appearance of Christians. The Apostle Paul in writing to Timothy wrote: "women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in seemly apparel," 1 Tim. 2:8. (The New American Standard says, "with proper clothing modestly and discreetly.") God does not want the Christian to dress immodestly or in such a way so as to attract attention to their outward appearance, especially if that attraction causes offense and tempts someone to sin. A Christian's dress is to reflect an attitude of "a gentle and a quiet spirit,” (1 Peter 3:4)
Sloppy or dirty wearing apparel, or the wearing of clothes that are normally set aside for leisure time activities has a great influence on attitudes and school work in general. There is a definite correlation between the neatness of dress and the attitude a person displays. Clean, neat, modest, discreet, proper clothing reflects a Christ-like attitude.
As Christians we conduct ourselves according to the Word and Will Of God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This relationship God has established with us affects all aspects of our lives. Our dress reflects our relationship to and with God, ourselves, and those around us. In keeping with humility, respect, and modesty the policy for student's dress in all K-8 grades is as follows:
Policy for student dress in all K-8 grades is as follows:
1. School clothing will appear neat, clean, and in good repair. Clothing should not be excessively faded, frayed, loose, or tight. It should not have holes or be torn (including expensive clothes made that way). There shall be no printing or pictures on clothing other than “spirit wear” which may include the symbol/name of our school or Lutheran High School. Spirit wear that is permissible has to have been provided by the Concordia or Lutheran High School and may include T-shirts or sweat shirts. Spiritual gifts and D.A.R.E. T-shirts that have been provided by Concordia are also allowed.
2. Shirts with collars, buttons, crew neck, turtle neck, or boat neck are acceptable for boys and girls. T-shirts meant to be worn as underwear are not to be worn as the outside garment. Cut-offs, tank tops, spaghetti straps, and halter-tops are excluded at any age. Shirts with ribbing which are meant to be worn outside should be worn so that the midriff is not seen. Large arm openings or low necklines on tops are not permitted.
3. Sweat shirts (other than spirit wear), sweat pants, or jogging suits are not to be worn to or during school except for P.E. class or other outdoor activities as weather dictates. School sports uniforms should not be worn to school unless otherwise instructed.
4. Skirts, dresses, shorts, skorts, or any divided clothing must measure no more than five inches from the floor as the child is kneeling for students in grades K-8. Leggings are permissible as long as they are covered by a skirt of appropriate length. Pants or jeans need to be ankle length or are considered under the next part (#5). Pants must be pulled up and worn around the waist. (A belt should be worn if necessary.) Spandex-type shorts and pajamas are prohibited.
5. Shorts, skorts (culottes), Capri pants (pedal pushers), or divided skirts may not be worn after September or before May. At other times of extreme heat, the principal may authorize shorts. The shirt portion should never separate from the pant portion causing the midriff to show even when arms are extended upwards. If there are excessive problems enforcing the rules concerning the clothes permitted in August/September, they will not be permitted the following May.
6. Shoes should have ties or straps, or fit the foot snugly enough to permit normal school activities. Shoes with opened-toes or opened-heels are not allowed. A separate pair of gym shoes with non-marking soles is required for all student use of the gym. Socks are required to be worn with the gym shoes. P.E. uniforms are available through the school and are required for grades 5-8.
7. Students are expected to show their reverence and respect to the Lord not only with their voices and gifts but also with their personal appearance. Each Wednesday the students of Concordia will spend time in the worship of the Savior in chapel. Dress appropriately to come into the presence of God and receive His Blessing!
8. The Board recognizes that these dress code rules may not be all-inclusive. There may be times when the faculty may need to expand the rules and make interpretations during the year. These clothing standards are in effect at all school functions, unless the school grants special permission.
9. Only girls are allowed to wear earrings. Neither girls nor boys are allowed body piercings. Permanent tattoos are to be covered. Students are not permitted to wear bandanas.
10. The above guidelines will be subject to the principal's discretion.
11. The dress code of Concordia will be enforced according to the following procedure:
a. First Infraction: The student will be informed privately by the teacher. The parents will be notified by the teacher and, should the infraction warrant, will be asked to bring a replacement set of clothing.
b. Second Infraction: The student will be informed by a teacher or the principal. The parents will be notified by the teacher and acceptable clothing or apparel must be brought to school, and the child will lose for the season the option to wear that type of clothing. Each infraction may be duly recorded.
The word discipline comes from the same root word as "disciple." That best explains our objective in disciplining children: namely, that of making them disciples (followers) of Christ. Good discipline is self-discipline in which the child has developed an attitude of loving concern for his parents, school, teachers, pastor, classmates, and self. We believe in disciplining a child toward a goal. The staff will deal with children in accordance with the teachings and philosophy of Christ. The staff will tolerate actions acceptable for certain levels of growth, channel actions when necessary, and finally, stop any bad behavior or conduct that interferes with the learning activities. The children will be taught to understand that for happy living it is necessary to love one another, serve one another, and to respect one another's rights and privileges.
Concordia Lutheran School recognizes all children as created by God and redeemed by our Lord Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, even the redeemed child of God sins and does not always conform to the will of God in Scripture. According to Scripture, while it becomes necessary for those in authority to administer discipline in an attempt to encourage the child of God in a proper relationship with God as well as with fellow peers, the whole purpose of discipline then is to show a child of God his erring ways that he may see his mistake and repent through the administration of the Gospel of God's forgiving grace through Christ Jesus. The Gospel is the means by which a student can change his lifestyle.
Various disciplinary measures will be carried out which may include, among others, counseling with students and parents, withholding privileges, detention, positive reinforcement, Bible lessons, prayer, and if all else fails suspension.
In the classroom, the teacher is the sole disciplinarian. Each teacher will establish his/her own classroom discipline procedures, etc.
Concordia has adopted the following assumptions about education:
1. Students come to Concordia to receive a Christian education.
2. Students have the right to receive their Christian education unhindered by disruptive students.
3. The teachers are in charge of the immediate Christian education of the child in “loco parentis” (in place of the parents).
4. The final responsibility for the discipline of the child rests with the parent. "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:4)
To aid effective learning and Christian conduct in the classroom, the following classroom rules are established:
1. Be prepared for class.
2. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
3. Use language appropriate for a Christian.
4. Always display a respectful attitude toward others, especially authority.
5. Live by the power of the Holy Spirit as God's redeemed child.
The following general rules apply to student behavior:
1. Do not disturb. Permissible noise depends upon the situation. There will be no running or shouting in the building at any time.
2. Gum chewing is not allowed on school or church property during school hours and in extended care. The misuse of gum is disruptive and creates a maintenance problem.
3. Nuisances should be left at home. Water pistols, small toys, noisemakers, skateboards, scooters, etc. will be confiscated at school.
4. Radios, tape recorders, CD players, cameras, pagers, electronic games, etc. do not belong at school without prior approval. These will be held until the end of the day for the child or for the parents to pick up.
5. Students are requested to respect property, which includes anything belonging to the congregation, the neighbors, or another student. Damages will be assessed to the parents.
6. Christian manners and a courteous attitude are strongly encouraged.
7. Offensive or disrespectful behavior, which includes sexual harassment of any kind, will not be tolerated. Copies of the entire sexual harassment policy are available in the office.
8. No weapons (knives, guns, clubs, etc.) are permitted on church property. Anyone displaying a weapon will be immediately reported to the police department.

Discipline Steps Toward Suspension or Expulsion:
If attempts to correct a child's behavior have proven unsuccessful, the principal may suspend a student. During that time, parents shall meet with the principal and attempt to correct the situation. During suspension the student will receive 0% for each day's work assignments. Upon return to school, the student will be required to make-up the work missed.
The Board of Christian Day School must approve permanent expulsion. When permanent expulsion is being considered, the parent will be invited to meet with the Board. The purpose of suspension is not to rid the school of a student, but to help the student see the severity of his erring behavior, repent of it, and return to continue as a student who brings honor to himself, his family, and his Lord.
Causes for Immediate, Interventional Discipline:
The following actions will lead directly to a one-day suspension and may be so listed as grounds for expulsion. If the child has broken the law, the proper authorities will be contacted.
1. Physically fighting with another student or teacher
2. Possession or use of controlled chemical substances
3. Possession or use of alcohol
4. Possession or use of tobacco or cannabis
5. Possession or use of firearms, pocket knives, or other weapons
6. Threat of violent action
7. Suspicion of criminal activity
8. Misuse of safety equipment, fire or burglar alarm, or fire extinguisher
[Back to TOP]
In House Suspension:
The following procedures are to be followed in cases of gross misconduct or disobedience:
1st incident:
Dealt with in the classroom by the teacher unless the teacher feels the misconduct or disobedience is too severe.
2nd incident:
In-school suspension for student(s).
3rd incident:
The student(s) is/are suspended from school for a full day.
4th incident:
The student(s) is/are suspended from school for a period not to exceed five days.
5th incident:
The student(s) after having been given a chance of a hearing with his/her parents before the Board of Christian Day School, if need be, will be expelled for the remainder of the school term.
The parents will be notified of an in-school suspension, which will be carried out by the end of the next school day and will last for one half of a school day. A parent must be present to supervise the in-school suspension. For one-half day the student will have no communication or interaction with the remainder of the student body. If possible, study material will be brought to the student, and, if necessary, lunch will be brought, so that he or she will not be able to eat with any other student. A student is responsible for any class work missed during an in-school suspension with credit to be given at the discretion of the teacher. The Pastor and the Board of Christian Day School will be notified of an in-school suspension.
During a suspension, the student will do all work and take all tests. Suspension also means that the student cannot participate in any school-sponsored activities. Athletes and cheerleaders cannot participate in any athletic functions.
Only the principal or pastor has the authority to suspend a student. Expulsion requires action by the Board of Christian Day School. If a teacher feels a student has done something to warrant this action, he/she should consult the principal.

GRIEVANCES
If at any time during the year any question arises regarding your child's education, parents are urged to follow this procedure:
1. Schedule an appointment with your child's teacher and discuss the concern with the teacher. Work to arrive at workable solution.
2. If no satisfactory understanding can be reached, the matter should be referred to the principal.
3. If this action does not meet with satisfaction, the matter should be referred to the Board of Christian Day School via the Chairman of the Board of Christian Day School. Be advised that the chairman does not act as an individual, but will present the situation to the principal and the Board. (See also Matt.18:15ff.)
All consultations should be made after school and normally without the children present. It is neither helpful to the student, parent, or teacher to voice criticism in the presence of the child, nor outside the immediate household. The working relationship between the child and teacher as well as the cause of Christ and Christian education is often damaged if the problem is discussed publicly.
ARRIVAL PROCEDURES
Children should be left off in the gym parking lot. Children may enter the school through the door by the gym, and from 8:15 a.m. students may also enter through the lower school door. Children should not enter through the door by the offices unless accompanied by a guardian or the child has business with the office. All children arriving at school prior to 8:15 a.m. need to go to before school care. No children are allowed to wait by the front doors unaccompanied by an adult. Children may wait in the cars with their parents or stand outside the door with an adult, but they cannot wait by themselves. Children arriving prior to 8:00 a.m. will pay the regular amount for extended care. (See Appendix C)
DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
We will dismiss all students at the same time - 3:15 P.M. The students will wait with their teachers only until 3:20 P.M. At that time we will block the entrance to the parking lot with cones. When there are no moving cars, we will dismiss the students to their cars on the parking lot. When all students are in their vehicles, the parking lot will be opened for cars to leave. After all cars have exited the lot, cars that did not arrive before the parking lot was closed may enter the lot and pick up their children. Children will be in the parking lot by 3:20 P.M. so we can minimize the traffic on Grant Street. We are asking all cars that park in the east lane (nearest the building) to exit the lot going east, and all cars that park in the west lane (nearest the house on the corner) exit to the west. The middle lane will remain closed till the traffic going out the east and west exits subsides.
All children will be picked up in the parking lot on the west side of the gym after school is dismissed. Please do not park on the street by the gym entrance. Children should not be picked up in the front of the school as this practice hampers through traffic and is also a hazard for children who must cross the street. Parents should park to avoid any backward movement of cars when children are in the parking lot. Bicycles are not allowed in the parking lot during dismissal periods. No unescorted child should remain on the school grounds longer than 10 minutes after school has been dismissed. At 3:30, the student will be placed in the Extended Care program and parents will be required to assume the financial responsibility (See Appendix C). The school property is not a playground after school. Once the child has been released to the guardian's custody, the parent assumes responsibility and must assure that all due care is taken to keep the child clear of all traffic in the parking lot.
SCHOOL YEAR
Concordia Lutheran School is in session either 176 days or 880 hours. Either comply with the state guidelines. See the school calendar (See Appendix A) for quarter and mid-term days as well as other important dates and events.
SCHOOL DISMISSAL DUE TO BAD WEATHER
If it is necessary to close school due to severe weather, mechanical failure, or other emergency the announcement will be made over local television and radio stations: WAND (Ch. 17 or CATV 10), WICS (Ch. 20 or CATV 2), WMAY (970 AM), WTAX (1240 AM), and (WDBR 103.7 FM). School closings will also be posted on our website. Please do not call the teachers! Concordia will align school closing with District 186 except for early dismissals due to bad weather or other emergencies that are not affecting Concordia. If we have an early dismissal we will have students, teachers, or secretaries call the parents from school.
ABSENCE AND ILLNESS OF PUPILS
School attendance is compulsory. For that reason Concordia School requires that all absences must be excused by phone before 9:15 a.m. by a parent. Absences for reasons other than illness, such as medical appointments must be excused in advance through the school office and the teacher in writing. For a planned absence, the teacher should have this request at least a day before the absence so the child will have the assigned work completed before or by the start of the day when the student returns. “Parent Take Your Child To Work Day”, family vacations, and any other unnecessary absences are unexcused absences so homework and tests must be completed before the absence or by the start of the day when the student returns.
If a child contracts head lice, please notify the child's teacher. Concordia Lutheran School has a “no nit” policy that means all nits (eggs) need to be removed before the child is readmitted to the school. Upon re-entry, the child's hair will be checked. If lice or eggs are found, the parent must pick up the child and provide further treatment until all nits are gone. The office will give parents treatment procedures and guidelines.
In the case of late arrivals or doctor appointments during the day, Concordia uses a check-out/check-in system. Students who arrive after the beginning of school or leave during the school day must check-in at the church office. A note or phone call from the parents should notify the school of doctor appointments. A child with an unexcused tardy will make up that amount of time at recess. A child's tardy arrival can be excused with a note from the parent. Students who are chronically tardy will be required to make up that time during recess and/or after school.
If your child is to be kept in for recess periods and physical education because he/she is recovering from an illness or injury or for some other reason, the parents or physician must supply a written request.
The child who is absent generally has the same number of days he/she was absent in which to make up assignments. If assignments are desired before a planned absence, the teacher should have this request at least one day before the assignments are to be picked up.
After a child has been absent for any reason, the parent or guardian must provide a dated, signed, and written excuse explaining the reason for the absence.
A written report from the doctor is required when a child returns to school after recovering from the following diseases: diphtheria and infectious hepatitis.
NOTE:
Your child is to be kept at home if he/she is running a temperature, or you are waiting for doctor's results on a strep infection. For the protection of the rest of the students, parents will be notified to pick up their child if he or she is sick or displaying a fever. A child should be free of a fever for 24 hours before returning to school.
A child who has 20 or more absences in one school year will put themselves in jeopardy of having to repeat that grade level. After 20 absences students may be asked to bring a note from a doctor. Individual cases will be reviewed by the administration.
After 3 tardies in one quarter, a child's guardian will receive a warning notice or phone call. Upon receiving the 4th tardy, the child will stay after school on the next Thursday from 3:30 - 4:00 doing a grade appropriate writing activity in silence in the classroom assigned for tardy duty. A child will serve a tardy detention for each successive tardy after the 4th until the end of the quarter. At 4:00 the child will be delivered to extended care where the child may be picked up for the day. Extended care fees will be charged for all children serving the tardy detention. At the end of each quarter the number of tardies previously accumulated will be erased, and the student will start over.
FIRST AID
In the case of an accident on school grounds the teacher will administer first aid. In case of serious injury or medical emergency, 911 will be called and a rescue squad will be requested; also the parent or person designated by the parent will be contacted. The cost of transportation and medical procedures will be the parent's responsibility. Emergency phone numbers are a necessity to properly administer this program. If your phone number at home, work, or any emergency number changes, notify the school immediately.
School personnel do not dispense aspirin or other internal medicines without prior written consent. If your child is in need of medication during school hours, you must fill out the medication form detailing the type, amount, and nature of the medication. You also will need to supply any necessary utensil (like spoons, eyedroppers, etc.). No medication will be allowed without your note, the doctor's signature or prescription, and the proper medication container.
EXTENDED CARE
Concordia conducts a childcare program for the children attending Concordia School before and after school. This is a service for the working parents. Children that are attending after school care must be signed in/out by their parent or guardian. Children must be previously enrolled to attend. The program will run from 7:00 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. before school and 3:20 - 5:30 p.m. after school. All children who are in extended care will be charged including children of parents who are doing volunteer work at school during this time. Please refer to Appendix C in the back of this book for the care program costs.
Approximate Extended Care Afternoon Schedule
Time Activity
3:20 - 3:40 Meet in gym or on the playground
3:40 - 3:50 Snack time
3:50 - 5:30 Study time & Playtime
LUNCH PROGRAM
Concordia sponsors a hot lunch program. Lunches must be purchased in advance. Milk is available each day and is included with every hot lunch by regulation unless there is a written excuse from a doctor. Please refer to Appendix C in the back of this book for lunch and milk prices. Parents are requested to ask the child how many lunches are left on their child's ticket; parents will be notified when their child's lunch ticket has expired.
Children may bring a lunch from home, but are not permitted to bring any beverage to school in glass bottles. Access to the kitchen microwave and refrigerator will not be permitted.
No catered meals for lunch that are brought in by parents for groups are permitted.
No pupil will leave the school grounds during the school day unless prior arrangements have been made in writing to the teacher or the principal. Children leaving school will be permitted to do so only if he/she is accompanied by a parent. If no parent is home during lunch, children must eat at school.
Financial aid for free and reduced lunches is available to all students who qualify. Eligibility for this program is based on household income and number of family members. Forms are available at the church office and are also sent with the summer letter. Names of students receiving free or reduced lunches will be held in strict confidence.
By the decision of the principal, any child owing $20.00 in unpaid lunch fees will be given only basic nourishment for lunch. Chronic failure to provide a lunch for your child can be understood as neglect.
Children in Grades K-8 have a library period once a week (or more if enough parental volunteers are available). Rules for library use will be published. Parents may help their children with library usage by identifying their student's library day(s) and reminding their children to return books by the due date.
From time to time new books are added to the school library. You may assist in the purchase of books by donating the cost of a book at birthdays, baptismal birthdays, anniversaries, or other special events. Ask the librarian for a listing of recently acquired books.
MANAGEMENT PLAN
Concordia Lutheran Church and School has been inspected for asbestos-containing materials as mandated by the USEPA, 40 CFR Part 763, Asbestos-Containing Material in Schools. A Management Plan has been prepared by an Accredited Management Planner with Asbestos Consultants of Illinois, Inc., to offer direction and guidance in the management of the asbestos in our buildings.
These reports are available for inspection at the Administrative offices during normal working hours at no cost.
Copies of these reports may be supplied upon request at minimal cost.

MARKETING PLAN
Concordia has instituted a policy that hopefully will help our current families financially as well as increase our enrollment. Here's how it works. We will offer to any preschool or day school parents/guardians a voucher if they bring into the school a new family. If the child entering the school is in the part day preschool program, the voucher will be for $50. If the child will be in the all day preschool or day school, the voucher will be for $100. There will be a limit of two vouchers for each new family. For example, if Family A brings us a new family of four children, Family A will receive two vouchers only. Family A can, however, recruit additional families and receive additional vouchers for each family with the limit of two for the same family. The vouchers are non-transferable to other families.
Also, the new family must have their child enrolled and attending for three months before the vouchers will be awarded. The new family must designate during the initial interview or subsequent interview with the secretary, teacher, or principal which family told them about the school so the voucher can be awarded properly.
The following family types will be considered exceptions and not included in this voucher program:
1. A family who has a parent or guardian that is a member of Concordia who has always wanted to send their child to the preschool or day school.
2. A family who has other children already attending the preschool or day school.
3. A family who has a child that has graduated from the preschool and is enrolling in the day school.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Sports Program:
Sports are offered to all students in Grades 5 through 8. These interscholastic sports include: volleyball, flag football, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, and track.
In order for students to be eligible to participate, the following requirements must be met:
1. All who choose to participate in athletics must have a physical examination on file with the school office prior to any practice or participation in the sport.
2. Students and their parents are expected to display Christian citizenship and attitudes in their total school relationship and in all athletic activities.
3. Eligibility Requirements: Each athlete will demonstrate a serious effort toward academic achievement in all subject areas. Individual circumstances will be taken into consideration and evaluated.
4. Athletes are urged to attend all practices. Should the student need to miss practice for family reasons, the parent should notify the coach before the scheduled practice or game. Unexcused absences may result in coaching decisions leading to extra running, missed quarters or games, or dismissal from the team.
5. Children participating in extra curricular activities and sports will be covered under the school's accident insurance policy.
6. Written consent of the parents is necessary for participation.
7. Parents must be able to pick their children up within 15 minutes after practice is over. The coach will give exact times.
8. If a child is absent from school for more than ˝ of the day of the activity, or more than ˝ day before when weekends are involved, he or she will not be allowed to participate. Other than keeping a doctor's appointment, the child must be in attendance the half day of school prior to the activity. Any student under suspension will be ineligible for participation until the suspension ends.
9. From each athelete, P.T.L. will collect a fee that will be returned when the uniform is returned in good condition.
Other activities:
Other extra-curricular activities include the BIBLE BOWL, SCIENCE FAIR, AND MUSIC FESTIVAL and MATH CONTEST for students in Grades 5 through 8. A SPELLING BEE involves students in grades 3 through 8. These activities are sponsored and held at Lutheran High School throughout the year. Concordia Lutheran School also sponsors a SPELLING BEE involving grades 2-8. The CHRISTMAS PROGRAMS include preschoolers through students in 8th grade. A FALL and SPRING ACTIVITY includes preschool through 8th grade.
Parties and Treats:
Classroom parties are held in celebration of some of the major holidays of the year. Children may bring treats (if possible consider sharing healthy treats) for their birthdays after notifying the teacher. Private party invitations may be handed out at school only if all students of the same gender in that class are invited.
FIELD TRIPS
Field trips are scheduled throughout the school year in order to enrich the learning experiences of the students. The classroom teacher arranges transportation. Usually a van and/or parent drivers are used (See DRIVERS FOR SCHOOL SPONSORED EVENTS).
Authorization for activities off the school grounds is part of the Master Record, but permission slips will also be distributed prior to the off campus activities. They are to be signed by the parent before the child will be permitted to accompany the group. Children not attending a specific event will remain in school in another classroom. Parents who may not want their child to attend a specific event are asked to inform the teacher in writing prior to the event.

HONOR ROLL
Recognition is given to students who maintain adequate grade averages at the end of each semester. Students named to the Superior Honor Roll must have straight "A's" for the entire semester. Students who are named to the High Honor Roll must have a grade average in the A- or B+ range for the grading period without any grades of C or below. The Honor Roll will consist
of those students who maintain a "B" average with no "D's." We will also give special recognition to students who may not fit into any of these categories but are working hard and using the talents God has blessed them with. Students who have received a suspension during the quarter will not be eligible for the Honor Roll that quarter. Students in Grades 5-8 are eligible to be placed on the honor roll. Academic courses include religion, memorization, math, English, reading, social studies, science, and spelling, but do not include art, handwriting, or physical education.
ATTENDANCE AWARDS
Recognition will be given for perfect and faithful attendance. Perfect school attendance means no absences and no more than one tardy in a semester. Faithful school attendance means no more than two absences and one tardy, or one absence and two tardies, or no more than three tardies in a semester. Perfect church and Sunday school attendance means no absences in a semester. Faithful church and Sunday school attendance means not missing more than two times in one semester.
GRADUATION AND AWARDS
An end of the year closing service is held for Grades K-8 on or near the last day of school. Also during this time we recognize students' various achievements with certificates and awards. The eighth grade has a special graduation service at the end of the year.

GENERAL SCHOOL INFORMATION
Bicycles and Scooters:
Students who ride their bicycles or scooters to school should park them by the bike rack. Bicycles or scooters should not be ridden or left on the sidewalks or by the doors. It is suggested that all bikes and scooters be locked.
Communications:
On the first and third Friday of every school month, the school newsletter The Charger will be sent home with each child. The newsletter will keep parents informed as to upcoming activities, events, and dates. Please make sure to ask your child for the newsletter those Fridays. Announcements for the newsletter should be turned in by 8:30 am on the Friday before publication.
Personal Property:
Concordia Lutheran School is not responsible or liable for a student's personal property, even if it is damaged or stolen. It is recommended that personal property remain at home unless it absolutely necessary.
School Pictures:
Each fall school pictures are taken of children in preschool through Grade 8. Individual as well as group sittings are taken. Pictures may be purchased at a nominal fee.
Fire and Tornado Drills:
Fire and tornado drills are held periodically. The teacher will give instructions to the students as to the procedure for their respective rooms. All students and teachers must leave the building during the fire drill or go to a prescribed safe place during a tornado drill. Fire extinguisher and apparatus in the school building are tested each year.
Parent-Teacher League (PTL):
All parents, who have children in preschool through grade 8, and teachers make up the PTL. The purpose of our PTL is to educate parents in the art of parenting and assisting them relating those parenting skills to their child's education. Subjects relating to Christian education in school and home are discussed and cooperation between parents and teachers is fostered. Special service projects are undertaken with the goal of strengthening the total program of the school.
Telephones and Cellular Phones:
Parents are asked not to disturb children or teachers while classes are in session. Whenever possible calls should be made during non-school hours (school hours are from 8:30 to 3:15), or if absolutely necessary, during recess or lunchtime.
Normally, the telephone or cellular phone should be used by students only in the event of an emergency, or if their parent sends a written note explaining why their child has a valid reason to use the telephone or cellular phone. Students will be allowed to use the school phone or cellular phone only after receiving permission from a teacher. Therefore, except for emergencies, all plans for after school activities, such as visiting another student after school, 4-H, basketball practice, etc., should be made at the pupil's home and not at school. Forgotten articles or materials (i.e., books, assignments, or travel arrangements) are NOT emergencies. Cellular phones must remain off at school from the time the pupil arrives at school to the time the student leaves for home. This includes the time the pupil is in extended care.
Homework:
Homework is considered to be an integral part of the educational process at Concordia Lutheran School. The grade level of the child determines the amount of assigned work. However, the amount of homework is often determined by how well the student uses his free time at school.
Parents can best help with homework, not by doing the child's assignment, but by providing a quiet place to study and helping to establish good study habits. The following six points may prove helpful:
1. Make an assignment book a requirement (individual teachers may make this a requirement for their classes) and check the assignments daily to make sure your child knows what he is to be working on.
2. Make sure your child has brought home with him all necessary books and materials needed to do the assignment. A carpenter without his tools is useless!
3. Provide a place to do homework away from all radios, stereos, TVs and telephones.
4. Check to see if there is a product produced during the homework time commensurate to the time spent.
5. If you feel your child is having a real problem with the quantity of time spent on homework, talk to your child's teacher immediately. Do not wait until regularly scheduled parent-teacher conferences or even the first report card.
Children are expected to prepare their work neatly and accurately and to submit assignments on time.
A student in school today needs to realize that he is required to work and produce just as his parents are required to work to support the family.
Homework is to be completed by the student for the day assigned. Assignments normally are given with a due date or may be due the very next day. An assignment normally should be completed at the beginning of the period of instruction for a given subject area. A student who recognizes that he/she has forgotten several assignments on a given day should tell the teacher in charge and should then work hard to try to complete those assignments before the beginning of the respective classes. Even when assignments are left at home, a "late homework penalty" may apply.
If a student is absent, the general policy for make-up work is based on the number of days absent. If a student is absent one day, he has one day to make up the work; absent two days, he has two days to make up the work, etc. The teacher may make exceptions and extensions.
In the case where a student has missed 15 days in a semester and is achieving below average grades (below C's) in any subject area, the parents, teacher, and principal will meet jointly to discuss the concerns and arrive at possible solutions to the situation. The parents will be told at that time that when 20 absences and below average grades in any subject area in a semester are reached, the parents will meet with the Board of Christian Education and the teacher to discuss solutions to the academic concerns. Failure to meet the academic standards may result in the student not passing at the end of the school year.
Grading:
Report cards/progress reports are issued eight times a year. Church and Sunday School attendance is reported along with daily attendance and tardiness, subject grades, and attitude and conduct evaluation.
At the end of the first quarter, all parents are encouraged to visit with their child's teacher to discuss their child's progress. These parent-teacher conferences are limited to 15 minutes on the average. Other conferences may be scheduled throughout the year.
Achievement and Abilities Tests:
Achievement and abilities tests (or an equivalent test) are administered annually. Results will be shared with the parents.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Concordia Lutheran School's primary support comes through the offerings of the members of Concordia Lutheran Church who support the work of the school as part of the total parish program. Concordia's church members make their gifts directly to the church and are encouraged to follow the Biblical suggestion of tithing.
Please keep in mind that the mission of Concordia Lutheran School is not to make a profit. We understand that there are times when money becomes tight, and we are sympathetic to the situation. If you are experiencing a financial problem, please contact the school as soon as possible so that we may help to the best of our abilities. You will be referred to the accounts and aid committee for possible assistance.
All enrolled families at Concordia have an obligation to our school to pay the agreed amount of fees in a timely manner. These fees not only cover the supplies listed under "Registration Fees," but also help pay our staff. If our staff is not paid, we cannot continue to supply our children with a quality Christian education.
PAYMENT SCHEDULE AND LATE PAYMENT POLICY
One half or full registration fees must be paid on or before the day of registration. Parents who anticipate being unable to pay the full amount, must contact a member of the Accounts and Aid Committee through the Church Office thirty days before the date of registration. No child will be admitted to classes without registration fees paid in full or having a signed alternate plan approved by the Committee. The registration fee is nonrefundable. If a student enrolls for only one semester, only one half of the registration fee will be required. No other reductions of the registration fee for enrollment for part of the school year will be applied.
On the day of registration, parents will also be expected to commit themselves to a specific agreement for ongoing fair share or tuition payment. Payments may be made on a monthly or semi-monthly basis. Fair share and tuition payments must be made prior to the first of the month for the coming month (Example: September payment is due August 31st). If the entire fair share or tuition is paid on or before August 31, there will be a $50 reduction in the amount due for fair share or tuition for each child with a maximum of $100 for the first two children in a family.
Fair share and tuition will be charged for any month the child is enrolled. If a child is enrolled for only part of a month, the child will be charged for the whole month. Also if the child withdraws from Concordia before the end of the school year and the child's fair share or tuition has been paid in advance, that advanced payment of the fair share or tuition which covers whole months will be refunded. Part of a month will not be refunded.
When a family has more than one child attending Concordia and/or Lutheran High School, fair share and community member tuition are charged according to the following child count. The oldest child attending either school is considered “first child”, the second oldest child attending either school is considered the “second child”, etc. This is then used to calculate the tuition rates owed (See Appendix B). Therefore, if the oldest child is attending Lutheran High School, then the oldest child attending Concordia would be considered the “second child” for tuition rates.
In the event of an unanticipated financial hardship, it is the parent's responsibility to seek other assistance and if none is available to notify a member of the Accounts and Aid Committee immediately in order to develop a mutually acceptable alternate payment plan. Failure to alert the Committee of the payment problem will be construed as indifference to the issue and may place the child's ongoing enrollment in jeopardy.
If fees are not paid and no arrangements for payment are made prior to the end of the month, the child will not be permitted to attend Concordia School, and their school district will be notified that they are no longer enrolled at Concordia.
The Accounts and Aid Committee reserves the right to turn over any unpaid fees to a collection agency.
The congregation has established a small scholarship fund for members who experience a temporary financial crisis. Parents who need such assistance should contact a member of the Accounts and Aid Committee.
CLASSROOM CAPACITY
The maximum kindergarten enrollment will need to be adjusted on a yearly basis. The combined number of kindergarten and grade 1 students should not exceed 26. In grades 1-8, the classrooms will have a optimum size of 24 students. When the students exceed the maximum number, students will be put on a waiting list. Congregation members will automatically move to the top of the list. Those at the top of the list will be admitted first. Other than congregation members, they will be admitted in the order they applied. Children who were in our programs the previous year automatically will have a place in their class.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL EXTENDED CARE
The hourly charges are $1.80 per hour and $1.00 per half-hour per child. There is a minimum of one-hour charge per day that your children are in extended care. All checks are to be made to Concordia Lutheran School. The board reserves the right to increase the charges of extended care if the present charges do not cover expenses of the current program. A family with 4 or more children in extended care will be charged for only the first three children.
The normal hours of coverage are 7:00 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. for before school and 3:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for after school. Children arriving prior to 8:00 a.m. will pay the regular amount for extended care. Those arriving between 8:00 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. will be charged $.50. There is a $5.00 per half-hour charge per student, after 5:30 p.m. Special arrangements should be made with the extended care provider for other than normal hours of coverage. Extended care is not provided on days that school is not in session. Payment of charges for this program are expected bi-weekly.
Afternoon snacks will be provided.
